RECRUITMENT

How Do I Join?

Are you at least 16 years old and willing to serve your fellow citizens as a firefighter? Then Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Rescue is looking for you! From High School students, to new and lifelong Cowichan Bay area residents, If you've got the time to dedicate to your community we'd love to have you. If you are not sure about joining and want to see our operations and training for yourself you are more then welcome to come down to the fire hall during our training nights and watch us in action but please call ahead to see what we have slated.

To obtain an application to join Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Rescue you can visit our fire hall during its regular business hours on Mondays 6-9pm and Sundays 9-11am.

With the application you must submit the following:

  • Fire Hall application Form.
  • Parental Consent (Jr. Applicants Only)
  • Medical Evaluation.
  • Current Drivers abstract.
  • RCMP Criminal Records Check.

Once your application has been submitted you will be contacted for an interview with the Recruitment Committee.  Upon the successful completion of the interview, the committee will forward your name and their recommendation to the membership as a whole. Upon approval you will then be informed of when you start your first night as a probationary member of Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Rescue.

As a Probationary firefighter you will under go 1 year of training to learn the basics of firefighting, auto extrication, technical rescue and much more. After 1 year as a Probationary Firefighter you will be tested on fire behavior, ventilation, terms and terminology, SCBAs, and pumps and pumping, and a  simulation when you are the in-charge firefighter to put your combined skills to the test. After your testing and final interview have been completed your status will be reviewed by the senior officers of the department and you will be voted on by the general membership.
